BPRC has long been busy to ensure that its chimpanzee colony finds good homes for the future. Along with concern for the welfare of the animals was the realisation that the colony comprised rare animals with a genetic background of West-African origin. For this reason the animals are part of an international breeding programme to ensure survival of this threatened species.
A requirement in the outplacement programme was that animals were part of the breeding programme in an good environment supported by knowledgeable animal care. BPRC was therefore pleased that some animals went to De Beekse Bergen Safari Park, to be cared for by personnel including two former BPRC employees familiar with the chimpanzees.
We are delighted with the news that on 20th March 2008, Stephan, was the first chimpanzee to be born at Beekse Bergen.
