Two groups of chimpanzees relocated to Safaripark

The common marmoset is highly susceptible to certain bacterial infections. This may be related to a relative lack of diversity in genes controlling the immune response. A recent study has confirmed this lack of diversity, but suggests that compensating mechanisms may be operating at the genetic level.

25 YEARS OF KIDNEY TRANSPLANT SURVIVAL

Monkey YM received a kidney transplant 25 years ago and is still in good  health, despite receiving no immunosuppressive treatment  for the last 24 years.
The success rate of human kidney transplants has increased dramatically during those 25 years, in part because of lessons learnt from research in animals.
What lessons can still be learnt from YM?

06-04-2006: Relocation BPRC-chimpanzees finalized.
28 chimpanzees, that have become chronically infected with AIDS or hepatitis virus, will be moved to a new Special Care Unit, Stichting AAP has built in Almere (the Netherlands).
For the 53 healthy chimpanzees a new location has been found. Twenty chimpanzees will be moved to Dierenpark Amersfoort (the Netherlands) while the 33 remaining chimpanzees will be moved to Safaripark Beekse Bergen (the Netherlands).
It is expected that all 81 chimpanzees will enjoy their new homes early 2007.
Persbericht van Ministerie OCW (in Dutch)

We have recently reported a new method for testing the effectivity of new immunotherapies for multiple sclerosis using magnetic resonance imaging techniques in marmosets, thereby quantifying the activity of lesions within the brain white matter.
