Safety and immunogenicity of a recombinant Plasmodium falciparum AMA1
malaria vaccine adjuvanted with Alhydrogel, Montanide ISA 720 or AS02.
A Phase 1 clinical trial has recently been completed with the BPRC AMA1
candidate malaria vaccine. This study showed the vaccine was effective in
inducing antibodies when combined with different adjuvants, and all
combinations induced antibodies that could functionally block parasite
invasion in vitro. This promising result is being followed up by a further
study in African adults under the auspices of AMANET (ClinicalTrials.gov
identifier NCT00431808).
