New research towards a universal flu vaccine
11 December 2013
Each year, the infuenza virus causes severe illness in millions of people worldwide. Unfortunately, the virus mutates very rapidly and unpredictable. Therefore, the current flu vaccines do not always provide full protection against flu.
A number of leading institutes in Europe, including the BPRC, has now devised an innovative strategy that involves the design of a flu vaccine that should confer broad and long-lasting protection against the influenza virus variants. This strategy is based on ‘EDUcating’ the immunne system to recognize combinations of influenza virus variants (‘FLU’). To develop this technology, the consortium was awarded an ‘EDUFLUVAC’ subsidy by the European Union. More information can be found at the website of the European Vaccine Initiative
