Animal trainer

Animal Science Department 40 Rijswijk
hoe we voor apen zorgen

At the Biomedical Primate Research Centre (BPRC), we work on solutions for serious diseases, with the aim of achieving a longer and healthier life for everyone. Do you enjoy working with animals and do you have experience in animal training? And would you like to contribute to the welfare of our primates as well as to high-quality biomedical research? Then you might be our new animal trainer.

Animal Trainer

Animal welfare is central at BPRC. We have our own colony of over 900 macaques, most of which live in social family groups in spacious enclosures with plenty of opportunities for play and climbing. As an animal trainer, you are an essential part of the Primate Behaviour & Colony Management Team. You work closely with our primates and animal caretakers on a daily basis, with the aim of enabling the animals to cooperate calmly and voluntarily in husbandry, medical procedures and research. By minimizing stress, you contribute not only to the animals’ welfare but also to the quality and reliability of research outcomes.

What you will do

You will work extensively with the primates and collaborate closely with animal caretakers, veterinarians and researchers. Your main focus will be coordinating the animal training programme.

You will:

  • plan and organize animal training activities
  • support animal caretakers with training
  • train primates yourself for husbandry, medical procedures and research
  • contribute ideas to improve training and enrichment and record these in a system
  • collaborate with veterinarians and researchers and support studies
  • assist with colony management when needed and occasionally give tours

Who you are

You have a natural affinity with animals and remain calm and consistent in your work. You are observant and understand animal behaviour, and you know how to respond to it. You have experience in animal training. Experience with primates is a plus, but not required. You are practical, accurate, and able to plan and maintain oversight, and you enjoy working as part of a team. You communicate easily and are flexible. Preferably, you are Article 13f certified (or equivalent).

What we offer

A varied full-time position in a working environment where animal welfare and research quality are key. You will be part of a committed team and have opportunities to further develop yourself.
