BPRC seeks to remain an indispensable link in the research chain

Today, the Dutch Senate approved the budget of the Ministry of Education, Culture and Science, which includes the decision to gradually redirect the government subsidy to BPRC over the next five years towards animal-free research and the development of animal-free innovations. This decision implies that, within five years, BPRC will no longer be permitted to conduct research involving non-human primates.
BPRC fully shares the ambition to ultimately replace animal testing. Accordingly, we remain committed to investing in the development of animal-free research methods to advance the transition towards an animal-free future. However, the proposed five-year transition period is very short — far too short to develop viable alternatives for certain complex diseases. This could impede the progress of developing new treatments, medicines, and vaccines.
We therefore express our disappointment with the government’s decision, as well as with the process that preceded it. This course of action was adopted without substantive debate.
We greatly value the support we have received in recent months. Scientists from both the Netherlands and abroad, patient representatives, civil society organizations, and pharmaceutical companies have voiced their concerns and emphasized the importance of research involving non-human primates for the development of new therapies, vaccines, and medicines. As users of our research outcomes, they underline the crucial role that BPRC plays in the research chain — the indispensable link between fundamental research and the practical applications that aim to diagnose, prevent, and cure disease.
What matters most is that research continues — research into serious and life-threatening human diseases. BPRC remains determined to fulfil its role in this endeavour. We therefore invite policymakers, scientists, and societal stakeholders to engage with us in shaping a responsible path forward. Life-saving research must not be halted or delayed as a consequence of this political decision.
