Frequently asked questions about animal welfare
BPRC has an excellent reputation when it comes to knowledge, colony management and accommodating and looking after the animals. We apply sophisticated methods to minimise the discomfort experienced by the animals to the maximum extent possible, and we have a transparent policy with regard to animal welfare. We do so because we feel that our monkeys deserve to lead the most comfortable lives we are able to offer them. This means that they must be able to engage in the kind of behaviour that comes natural to their species.
Animal welfare is always our highest priority. We fully comply with all legal standards and regulations for animal research.
Our enclosures are specially designed to mimic natural conditions as closely as possible. They include both indoor and outdoor areas, climbing structures, and toys to keep them engaged. This is called enrichment: it allows the monkeys to express natural behaviors and helps prevent stress.
We also monitor their health and behavior closely. Veterinarians and caretakers observe the monkeys every day and ensure they are well cared for. In this way, we aim to carry out research responsibly—both for the animals and for the benefit of medical science.
