Primate Enrichment Specialist

Do you want to contribute daily to animal welfare within a unique research environment? Are you creative, hands-on and energized by developing new ideas? Then we are looking for you. As an Enrichment Specialist, you will work within the Primate Behaviour & Colony Management team and play an important role in stimulating natural behaviour and the wellbeing of the primates at the BPRC.

What will you do?

As an Enrichment Specialist, you will play a proactive role in the BPRC’s enrichment programme. You will contribute new ideas, develop and test enrichment items, and coordinate the implementation of enrichment activities for different animal groups. In this way, you will actively contribute to natural behaviour and the wellbeing of the primates.

An important part of your role is coordinating the animal kitchen. Here, food and enrichment items for the animals are prepared on a daily basis. You will participate in daily operations, keep materials and supplies organised, and ensure enrichment products are available on time. You will also manage the enrichment area and maintain contact with external parties regarding suitable materials and new ideas.

In addition, you will work closely with animal caretakers, animal trainers and colleagues from colony management. You will observe behaviour, contribute ideas for improvements in care and housing, and support other team activities where needed. You will also contribute to knowledge sharing both within the BPRC and beyond. This includes giving guided tours to visitors and assisting with welfare activities, health checks and biotechnical procedures.

Who are you?

We are looking for a creative, committed and practical colleague with a strong passion for animal welfare. You enjoy working as part of a team, are flexible and able to maintain a good overview of different tasks and responsibilities.

In addition:

Preferably, you have experience with enrichment, behavioural observation and animal training;
You are both creative and practical;
You have good planning and organisational skills;
You work proactively and accurately;
You have strong communication skills;
You have an eye for detail and strong observational abilities.
